Attendance & Engagement

Regular attendance is one of the strongest predictors of academic success. Here's what you need to know about our attendance requirements and what to do if you can't attend.

Attendance requirements

Bloomsbury Institute requires a minimum attendance of 80% across all your modules. Attendance is monitored weekly and you'll be contacted if your attendance falls below this threshold.

→Attendance is recorded at every session via the register.
→If you're absent, you must notify your module tutor and SEWS as soon as possible.
→Persistent unexplained absence may result in a formal engagement review.
→International students: visa compliance requires us to monitor your attendance closely. Falling below 80% may trigger a report to the Home Office.

Reporting absence

If you can't attend a session, report your absence as early as possible:

Email your module tutor to let them know you won't be attending.

Email SEWS at [email protected] so your absence is recorded centrally.

If your absence is due to illness, you may be asked to provide a self-certification form or medical evidence.

Extenuating Circumstances (EC)

If a serious personal, medical, or family event significantly affects your ability to attend or submit work, you can apply for Extenuating Circumstances. A successful EC application can result in an extension, a deferred assessment, or other academic adjustments.

Apply as soon as possible — ideally before the deadline or assessment date. Late applications require a strong reason for the delay. You'll need to provide supporting evidence (e.g. a doctor's letter, death certificate, or police report).
