Many of our students balance childcare, caring responsibilities, and family commitments alongside their studies. Our 3-days-per-week study pattern is designed to make this possible, and our SEWS team is here to help you navigate any challenges that arise.
Childcare Grant
From October 2025, eligible students with dependants can apply for a Childcare Grant through Student Finance England. This covers up to 85% of childcare costs (up to a maximum per week) for children under 15 (or under 17 if they have special educational needs).
You must be a full-time student and your childcare provider must be Ofsted-registered.
Apply at the same time as your main student finance application, or separately if you're already enrolled.
Contact SEWS for help understanding your eligibility and completing your application.
Parents' Learning Allowance
If you have children, you may also be eligible for the Parents' Learning Allowance — a non-repayable grant to help with course-related costs. The amount depends on your household income.

If a family emergency or caring responsibility affects your attendance or ability to submit work on time, contact SEWS as early as possible. We can help you:
Hardship Fund
If you're experiencing unexpected financial difficulty — including costs related to childcare or a family emergency — you may be eligible for a discretionary award from the Hardship Fund. Awards are non-repayable and assessed on a case-by-case basis.
